Description:
Golden Hour is a programmatic work inspired by the composer's visit to Malibu, CA for an afternoon picnic. As the sun was setting, beautiful hues kissed the sky and inspired this lyrical work based on the Lydian scale. A great way to introduce your students to lush, cinematic harmonies as well as introducing the Lydian mode.
The Lydian scale is the basis for the for the harmonic structure. The melody is played on an F# against a C major chord. The A theme is played in the high strings, then the lower strings take over. The B theme comes in at bar 39 with the lower strings. The piece ends quietly with a violin solo just as the sun sets over the horizon.
